Enough talk already... together let's just get it done!

HR676.org,Inc.

A citizens health insurance reform alliance
formed to promote the successful passage of:

People often ask "I'm just one person, how can I possibly make a difference?"
If you're one of those people, here's your answer...

There is now a bill in Congress, H.R. 676 that offers a new and exciting way for you and your fellow citizens to work together and help make the dream of affordable health insurance for every American a reality.  According to the World Health Organization, the US is ranked 37th in the world in providing adequate health care services to its citizens.  Most Americans would agree that this is simply not acceptable and has to change.  Our plan is a very simple one.  Raise money to fund a massive and professionally produced advertising and public relations outreach, everything from full-page newspaper ads to prime time TV and radio spots.  Advertising and modern public relations are some of the most powerful forces for behavior change ever devised and we will use it to it's full effect to promote this bill.  This massive and ongoing ad campaign will be focused on one primary objective; to make every citizen in America aware of the tremendous benefits of this bill and encourage them to make their representatives in Congress aware of their desire to see this measure become the law of the land.   We are starting off by asking every person interested in supporting this cause to contribute .99 cents per month in the form of a single annual donation of $10.98 (one month free).

Our goal is to eventually sign-up one million members.  If you will sign-up today and then encourage two friends to do the same, and so-on, and so-on, we will reach our goal with room to spare.  This will give us a million dollar plus per month promotion and advertising budget which will make you and us a tremendously powerful force for health care reform in the United States of America!!  Nothing like this has ever been done before on this scale and its success will surely signal a fundamental change in the ability of grass roots public involvement in politics to have a real and significant impact.  Please help if you can.

Tell me a little bit about H.R. 676...

The opponents of national health care, mostly those who are badly misinformed or paid agents of big corporations that are now making huge profits off of the current system by denying needed care to millions, will try to scare you by calling it “socialized medicine”.  You’re going to hear that a lot in the coming months but don't be fooled; nothing could be farther from the truth.  In fact, the goal of this program is simply to create a fair and equitable single payer health care plan that all Americans can afford and benefit from while leaving most of the existing structure of practicing health care professionals and facilities completely alone.  You choose your doctors, your hospitals and need no permission from anyone to go see them whenever necessary.  No exclusions, no pre-existing conditions, no denied claims, just top rate, affordable, professional care for you and your family including prescription drugs, mental health AND dental services in addition to long term care, whenever you need it.

Why should I support HR676.org?

There are a lot of organizations out there today that are in favor of national health insurance.  You probably haven't heard about too many of them even though some do  have really great web sites with a lot of information on them.  The problem is that few of them have any real plan of action designed to actually make national health insurance a reality.  Talking about the problem is a very good thing, but we simply feel that talking just isn't enough.  Ours is a totally unique approach in that regard because our intention is to actively work towards changing the landscape in America by fundamentally altering the current health insurance scene from one dominated by large for-profit corporations whose primary goal is to serve the needs of their investors and are content to leave millions behind to one controlled by a much more fair and equitable system whose primary responsibility will be to promote and protect the health of every American leaving none behind.  Simply put we believe that our approach will make it possible to actually achieve this goal; a goal that has eluded us for so long.  The basic premise is that if left to the existing political system, achieving the goal of creating a national health insurance system will never be possible.  Why do we feel this way?  The reasons are clear...

The concept of national health insurance for all citizens has been on the table since the Truman era back in the 1950’s.  Our politicians have had over half a century to work out a plan yet aside from the basic Medicare model,
which has recently been so badly watered down by an ultra conservative administration in favor of even more corporate profits, nothing of any kind has been accomplished.  In the meantime every other modern industrialized country in the world has passed us by and managed to find a way to do it.  Why not us?  Well, for one thing, the huge and powerful health insurance industry in this country has spent so much money on lobbying and contributing to the campaigns of so many politicians that they pretty much own and control the political process insofar as health insurance issues are concerned.  Quite frankly, their main purpose is to make sure that things remain pretty much as they are regardless of how many people are left without any real access to the medical care system.  Consequently, another way must be foundThat way is to directly organize and focus the will of the people themselves to help bring about the needed changes.  That’s where HR676.org, Inc. comes in and the vehicle we intend to use to make this happen is a massive, professional, ongoing nationwide advertising campaign financed by public contributions, a campaign that will focus on educating the public as to the benefits of national health insurance for all.

Scientia est Potentia, knowledge IS power, and by bringing our message over and over again to every American in every corner of our country, Americans that will be repeatedly encouraged to communicate their desires with their elected officials, we believe that enough pressure can be brought to bear on Congress through this totally unique and highly focused approach to ultimately convince our politicians to finally do the right thing.  And we will not quit or let up until the goal is achieved!  That is our promise and our pledge, but it all starts with you and we MUST have your help, right now, TODAY, to start to make the dream a reality

Why Single Payer?

Every private insurance company, currently there are hundreds of them, has their own set of forms, rules and procedures.  This literally creates a mind boggling, confusing, inefficient and tremendously costly administrative nightmare for every health care provider in the country.  The simple act of eliminating these separate and redundant administrative systems from the health insurance scene and implementing a national single payer system through the New Medicare will save literally hundreds of billions of dollars annually, money that can then be devoted to bringing a better level of care to every American citizen.  Just this one step alone will make such a huge and immediate improvement.

Why haven’t I heard of this bill before?

That’s a good question!  Even though this legislation has been on the table since 2003, almost nobody is aware of its existence.  It’s time to change all that!  The primary purpose of HR676.org,Inc. will be to raise public funds to help educate the American people about the benefits of this program and organize grass roots support for national health insurance.  We will create a living, pulsing groundswell of active and determined citizens; a tsunami of public support for  national health insurance that even the private health insurance industry with all of it's massive wealth and power, all of its lobbying and political contributions will not be able to resist.  A movement that all of the millions of American citizens who care about improving the health care system of this country will want to be a part of and that no member of  Congress wishing to remain in office will dare to ignore or disappoint.  The first phase will be to advertise and promote this bill nationwide, increasing public awareness and support for this kind of long overdue health insurance reform in the US by implementing extensive TV, radio and Internet based educational programs that will inform and encourage millions of average citizens across the country to join together to work towards its passage and give them the tools to do so.  Local chapters will be encouraged to form and help bring this message to every doorstep in America.

18,000 people die every year in America because of no health insurance.
We must act NOW!  Please help...

Won’t it require a huge new federal bureaucracy to implement such a massive change?

Actually No.  H.R. 676 simply calls for the expansion and improvement of the current and extremely successful Medicare system, widely recognized as one of the most cost efficient medical management systems in the world, to be upgraded and expanded to include all Americans rather than just those over age 65.

Do we really want our health care system to be controlled by government bureaucrats?

Of all the straw man arguments that you hear from the opposition, and of course you will hear this one more and more as the election season heats up, this is the one that has has to take first prize.  To begin with, government bureaucrats no not "run" the current Medicare system and they will not "run" the New Medicare either, at least not in the sense that they will intervene between doctor and patient where critical health care decisions are concerned as the current system presently allows.  But the overwhelming irony comes from the fact that under the current system CORPORATE bureaucrats run the system with an iron fist denying needed health care to thousands for the sake of higher profits, patients who are paying huge premiums to get it.  So the question becomes - why is it better for the system to be run by corporate bureaucrats than government ones?  I guess you have to be the one to decide that issue but to a lot of Americans, given the track record of the corporate bureaucrats over the last half century, the issue is really a no brainer.

Won’t it require a massive imposition of new taxes to fund this program?

In a word… No!  Those Americans who currently subscribe to commercial health insurance already pay huge and ever spiraling amounts in monthly premiums to maintain an ever shrinking level of coverage.  National health insurance will simply require participating members to pay a similar monthly health insurance premium, perhaps in the form of a tax (but it's still the same thing as a premium no matter what you call it**), but into the New Medicare system instead - on a stable, affordable, progressive (sliding scale) basis.  For example, those in the lower income brackets will pay very low premiums according their financial ability; some may not be able to pay anything at all.  Those in the middle will pay a reasonable but affordable premium and those in the very high income brackets will pay a little bit more in accordance with their abilities, but the premiums will be fair and reasonable at all levels and all will be covered! In addition, under the New Medicare, there will be a new focus on preventative medical health care. Up until now, this has not been widely offered by private health insurance carriers because it does not tend to generate immediate profits but experts agree that over time it will not only save additional billions in medical costs nationwide but also contribute dramatically to improving the overall level of health for all Americans as well.

**Whatever they call it - It's very important to keep in mind that this is NOT an ADDITIONAL tax but a REPLACEMENT for current private health premiums.

One third of all bankruptcies in America are caused by medical bills.  This is a total outrage!
No other country in the world has this problem.... why do we?

I’m over 65 and already on Medicare.  What’s going to happen to me?

For those over 65, nothing will change except that the services will become much simpler and actually much better.  With the elimination of the profit factor, billions and billions more will be available to improve the US health care system and make its benefits available to every citizen.

With such huge, wealthy and powerful corporate giants now in control of our medical system and political process, how will it be possible to bring about this kind of fundamental change?

It certainly won’t be easy but by rallying public support nationwide through an extensive and ongoing education, advertising and promotion campaign, we are confident in the ability of the American people to gain the ultimate victory.  Our goal is to eventually recruit at least one million members.  Members will donate .99 cents per month to help support and encourage our members of Congress in their fight to make national health insurance a reality.  That's a million dollars a month and it will buy a lot of organizing and advertising, but that’s really only the beginning.  It will clearly take a lot more than that to get the job done so the sooner we get started the better. Our plan for success is to grow HR676.org, Inc. into a recognized and significant force on the American scene.  We'll start out by beginning our outreach activities in progressively oriented communities that are already more or less receptive to this message.  Later on, as we continue to grow, we can then begin to implement a district by district effort, focusing our resources in those congressional districts where opposition is greatest.  In this way, we can more effectively help convince those specific members of congress opposed to improving health care in America that they need to stop representing the wealthy corporate special interests that contribute large sums of money to their political campaigns and start doing what’s right and best for their constituents.  This will be accomplished in two ways: (1) Through direct communications with the congressional representatives themselves and (2) by better educating and informing the constituencies in these districts through localized professional TV and radio advertising and more focused local organizing as to the tremendous benefits that national health insurance will provide them and their families under the New Medicare program and then encouraging them to communicate this newly acquired awareness with their members of Congress.

Would you join the fight for health insurance reform if you KNEW that your efforts      would really make a difference?

Isn’t this really just socialized medicine like your critics say it is?

No, it really isn’t, not even close.  Socialized medicine is where the state owns and controls all of the assets of the system and employs all of the medical personnel involved as well.  With the New Medicare, the state owns nothing and only exercises minimum control over the process such as establishing much needed cost controls and some helpful operating guidelines and mechanisms.  Real examples of “socialized” services include those necessary public services such as police and fire which everyone agrees needs to be provided as government services for the benefit of society.  How would you like it if all of the police and fire departments across the country were set up like our current medical system is today and their services were only available on a pay-per-use basis where only the well to do and privileged could actually afford to have access to them?  That doesn’t make any more sense than having our medical services limited as they are now in that very same way either… does it!

Won’t cost controls reduce the availability and quality of medical care?

No they won’t.  Don’t let them scare you with this one either.  There will still be plenty of money available for doctors, nurses, health care workers, to maintain very high incomes.  The concept of corporate "for profit" hospitals will have to be seriously re-evaluated and pharmaceutical companies will have to submit to negotiated contracts like they do with the VA and in many other countries around the world, but there will still be plenty of money to go around.  In fact there will actually be more money available overall once the costly burden of trying to manage the blinding and overwhelming complexity of the current administrative systems now in effect is eliminated in favor of the New Medicare single payer system.  The fact is that inflation in this one industry is so far above the national average that reasonable and modest controls will be temporarily necessary for national health insurance to work successfully for us all. Also, currently, “for profit” health care corporations must compete on Wall Street for investor and shareholder dollars by artificially increasing health care costs and denying their services as much as possible.  Once this factor is eliminated from the system, those costs are very likely to begin to stabilize by themselves to a very large degree almost immediately making the need for any significant outside controls rare and short term.
